The Nectar of Instruction Text 5 – Seeing the Good in Others

3 min read

"One should mentally honour the devotee who chants the holy name of the Lord, offer humble obeisances to the devotee who has undergone spiritual initiation and is engaged in worshipping the Deity, and associate with and faithfully serve that pure devotee who is advanced in undeviated devotional service and whose heart is completely free from the propensity to criticise others."

What Does It Mean?

Every one of us is on a journey.

Some people are taking their very first steps in faith, while others have been walking the spiritual path for many years. Text 5 reminds us that although our journeys may look different, each person deserves respect and encouragement.

Rupa Goswami teaches us to honour all devotees while recognising that we can learn from those who are more spiritually mature. Just as we might seek the guidance of an experienced teacher in any area of life, we can also benefit from spending time with those whose lives reflect deep faith, humility and devotion.

One of the most beautiful qualities of an advanced devotee is not knowledge alone, but kindness. Their heart is free from the desire to criticise others. Instead, they encourage, inspire and gently help others grow closer to the Lord.

Srila Prabhupada's Key Insights

· Honour anyone who sincerely chants the holy names of the Lord.

· Offer respect to initiated devotees who are engaged in devotional service.

· Seek the company of advanced devotees whose lives are centred on loving service to God.

· Learn through humble service and sincere association.

· There are different stages of spiritual development, and each deserves appropriate respect.

· Good association is one of the greatest influences on our own spiritual growth.

· Pure devotees are recognised by their humility, compassion and freedom from criticism.

Living This Teaching Today

In today's world, it can be easy to compare ourselves with others or to notice their faults before we recognise their strengths.

Text 5 gently invites us to take a different approach.

Instead of asking, "How far have they come?" perhaps we can ask, "What can I appreciate or learn from this person?"

Every person we meet has something to teach us. Some inspire us through their wisdom, others through their kindness, perseverance or quiet faith. When we approach people with humility rather than judgement, our own hearts begin to change.

The company we keep also shapes the people we become. Spending time with those who encourage our faith, speak kindly and live with integrity gently draws us in the same direction.

As we learn to see the good in others, we begin to reflect more of the Lord's love ourselves.

Reflection

· Who are the people that encourage me to grow closer to God?

· How can I show greater respect and appreciation for those around me?

· Am I known more for finding faults or for encouraging others?

A Gentle Prayer

May the Lord help me to see others through eyes of kindness and compassion.

May He give me the humility to learn from those who walk faithfully before me, and the grace to encourage those who walk beside me. May my words build others up, my heart remain free from criticism and my life reflect His love.

May I grow each day in faith, humility and gratitude, always drawing a little closer to the Lord.
